Being in a 4-H club provides important opportunities for youth to learn subject matter and life skills while working with a caring adult and other youth. Once youth are 4-H members, they become eligible for a variety of benefits of belonging to 4-H, including awards, trips, special events, etc. Of course, it's meant to be fun for the kids and the leaders too! Most 4-H clubs are led by volunteers, which may include staff in after school sites, military installations, etc. Staring a 4-H club isn't difficult and you are encouraged to seek help from parents or other volunteers. Local Extension/4-H staff can help you get started. Although the details for starting a 4-H club vary somewhat by state and county, here are the basic steps: 1. Contact 4-H Agent at your local county Cooperative Extension office. Find an Extension office. 2. Attend volunteer leader training 3. Obtain county and state 4-H policies and guidelines about membership requirements, etc. 4. Assess needs and interests of youth, parents, and the community 5. Recruit potential members 6. Conduct organizational meeting 7. Recruit project leader(s) and distribute 4-H curriculum/project materials. To find out about many 4-H project materials available from 4-HCCS or to order online, visit its web site at www.4-hcurriculum.org. 8. Complete & submit enrollment forms and appropriate reports 9. Assist with club by-laws preparation Some helpful resources for starting and running 4-H clubs can be found at: 4-H Leader Training Series web site: www.nj4h.rutgers.edu/volunteering/lts/ 4-H 101 web site: www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/library/4h_docs.htm
