Community Forest Maps

Mapping the trees in your community is a fun, useful exercise. One of the requirements of the Tree City USA program is a street tree inventory. Your mapping project can be a start toward that goal for your community.

Once you’ve gotten familiar with map-making you could do specific maps for your neighborhood such as a local park, an individual street or the business area of town. Map the trees and make note of their species, size and condition. You may want to suggest that trees be planted in open spaces or the removal of trees that are declining. Your maps can help adults to get a clearer picture of the condition of your neighborhood trees.

Some cities have very detailed maps of their environmental resources.
