Selected Forest Industry Sites
for Teachers and Adult Leaders

The forest products industry has a keen interest in the education of teachers and youth leaders. Many printed and Internet resources are available to leaders. In addition, there are sponsored workshops available to give educators experiences with forest management.

This site lists contacts with the forest industry and the larger forestry community where teachers and leaders can go for educational materials and ideas to use forestry in their work with youth.


Society of American Foresters Tools For Teachers page – This is a list of web links to lesson plans for all ages to help bring forestry into the classroom.

State Forestry Associations – Many states have a forestry association that is involved in forestry education and can provide activities and materials for youth leaders. Search for your state’s forestry association and contact them directly. Some examples of state forestry associations are:

Greenspirit for a Sustainable Future– A website by Patrick Moore about Sustainable Forestry.

The Sustainable Forest Initiative – The Sustainable Forestry Initiative ® (SFI) program is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists and scientists, among others that combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality. Classroom Earth – A wealth of environmental education programs and materials from the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation. Programs for in school, after school and home schooling and more are here.

Wood Promotion Network – The Wood Promotion Network provides consumer-friendly information about North America’s forests and use of wood in construction.

American Forest and Paper Association – The gateway to the forest products and paper industry.

Western Wood Products Association – The WWPA is a member organization of softwood lumber producers in the western US.

Southern Forest Products Association – The SFPA is a member organization of southern pine lumber producers.

Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association – The SLMA is a member organization for lumber producers in the southeastern US. SLMA also has publications and posters for youth.

Hardwood Information Center – This website is a comprehensive source of information on North American hardwood lumber and other products.

National Hardwood Lumber Association – The NHLA is a membership organization for hardwood lumber manufacturers in the US and Canada.

Georgia Pacific – Georgia Pacific is one of the largest forest products companies in the world. GP also promotes forest education. Check out the “Education Station” on their page.

Weyerhaeuser – Weyerhaeuser is another of the largest forest products companies in the US.

International Paper – A worldwide forest products company, IP’s website has forestry educational materials available in the “Learning Center” section.
