Sleeping with a Masterpiece

Create a pillow using a printed image of a favorite work of art. Print your favorite computer masterpiece off the internet on to fabric. Or print one of your own original favorites from a paint program, such as Kid Pix. You can enjoy a work of art in many different forms besides framed and hanging in a museum. Today artists enjoy making things out of copies from the masters. And while a copy is always different from the original, artists can paint it on all sorts of surfaces from chairs to milk cans to fabric. In this activity, you will print an image on fabric, decorate it, then, if you like, make it into a pillow.

Copyright laws protect the work of artists from commercial use unknown to the artists. You may print a copy of a masterpiece for your own use. However, if you decided to sell pillows with the masterpiece printed on them, you would need to get written permission from the artist or the institution that owns the piece.

Materials:

  • Computer software such as Kid’s Pix or  a paint program

  • Jet-set printer

  • 2 pieces of muslin fabric 8 ˝” x 11” (washed with soap and water)

  • Freezer paper 8 ˝ “x 11”

  • Permanent markers, iron on crayons, colored threads or other supplies for decorating fabric

  • Scissors

  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

  • Batting or other stuffing material

Ready, Set, Create

  1. Iron the shiny side of the freezer paper to one piece of muslin.

  2. Put the muslin/freezer paper in your printer.

  3. Select a clear color image of a favorite work of art. To change the size of the image, import it into a Paint program, like Kid Pix and adjust the size. You can add other changes here as well.

  4. Print it using an Inkjet printer.

  5. Using fabric decorating colors or permanent markers, add to the image or create a border around it. Sew on beads, cord, and decorative stitches.

  6. Put the two muslin pieces together, front to front. Sew on the machine or by hand. Leave an opening.

  7. Turn right side out. Stuff. Sew the opening closed.

  8. (Optional) Add tassels.

  9. Sleep with the masterpiece.

  • How does your finished pillow look different from the original masterpiece?

  • What did you add that brings out the spirit of the original and how you feel about it?

  • What else can you make using a printed image?

  • When is it okay to use images from other people’s artwork and when isn’t it?
