‘Start
your Engines’ is a curriculum that focuses on small engines and their
applications, primarily the lawn and garden. This interactive,
experiential learning curriculum is aimed at youth from grade three
through high school.
This
curricula consists three youth guides and one helper’s guide. The youth
guides are ‘Crank It Up’ for grades three through five, ‘Warm It Up’ for
grades six through eight, and ‘Tune It Up’ for grades nine through
twelve. Each youth guide has thirteen or fourteen activities, planning guide,
achievement program, and a list of resources. Each activity has a life
or science skill, small engines skill, national education standard, and
a success indicator.
The
helper’s guide contains nine group activities, helpful helper’s hints,
evaluating ideas for working with youth, and many other very useful
resources for the helper.
The guides are designed to use the experiential learning
model which uses five learning steps that are specific and sequential.
This process of experiential learning engages learners actively,
encouraging them to think more, work harder, and ultimately learn more
thoroughly
than other teaching and learning methods.
