Education Standards: Each activity was designed to meet Educational Standards in the language arts, science, and technology. A standard is listed in each activity and a list of standards and associated activities can be found in the Helper’s Guide. View chart.

Connecting Rod

  1. Evaluating data (NL.ENG.K12.7) Learners conduct research and evaluate data with respect to starting a business and selecting and purchasing engines parts, tools, engines, and small engine powered equipment.

  2. Developing research skills (NL.ENG.K12.8) Learners use a variety of technological and information sources such as technical publications, service manuals, and technical reports and conduct research with small engine activities through part and tool identification, engine adjustments, and engine assembly.

  3. Physical Science (NS.K-4.2) Learners will develop an understanding material and object properties such as oil properties, air filtering systems, and engine starting.

  4. Science and technology (NS.K-4.5) Learners will develop an understanding of technical design, science, and technology through spark plug adjustment and selection.

  5. Personal and social perspectives (NS.K-4.6) Learners will develop understanding of personal health and safety through awareness of wearing proper clothing when operating equipment and following instructions found on safety labels.

  6. Science as inquiry (NS.5-8.1) Learners will develop understanding of scientific inquiry through different engine designs and proper lawn mowing methods.

  7. Physical Science (NS.5-8.2) Learners will develop an understanding of material and object properties and the position and motion of small engine parts.

  8. Science and Technology (NS.5-8.5) Learners will develop an understanding of technical design, science, and technology by adjusting and evaluating the effect of the carburetor adjustment on engine performance and fuel ignition.

  9. Science as inquiry (NS.9-12.1) Learners will develop understanding of scientific inquiry through sounds of an engine operating under several conditions and improper adjustments.

  10. Physical Science (NS.9-12.2) Learner will develop an understanding of motions, forces, structure, and interactions of energy and matter.

  11. Personal and Social Perspective (NS9-12.6) Learner will develop understanding of personal and community health through laws, rules, regulations and small engine powered equipment design trends.

  12. Basic operations and concepts (NT.K-12.1) Learner will develop understanding of the operation of lawn and garden equipment.
