Student and helper identify engine parts.

Ideas: The small engine exhibit at a county fair may be a part of the mechanical projects. Contacting the county extension is encouraged to insure there is an opportunity to exhibit and for the scoring information. Ideas for exhibiting something related to small engine abound. Following are just few examples:

  • Parts board

  • Engine cutaway

  • Restored small engine powered equipment i.e. riding lawnmower

  • Poster

  1. Engine cutaway

  2. Air filter types

  3. Description of engine operation

  4. Two stroke versus four stroke engines

  5. Safety issues with small engine powered equipment

  6. Environmental issues with small engines

  7. How a carburetor works

  8. How the electrical spark is produced without a battery

  9. Engine oil characteristics

Classes: To obtain information of the fair class for a small engine display or project, see the county extension office. The small engine entries may be in a category by itself or may be a part of another category such as mechanical science.

Score cards: The evaluation or judging of a small engine display or project will be dependent whether it is a poster or a project.
